03.17.2010 - Thai-No-Mite!
Let’s face it. The restaurants in Victory Park haven’t exactly been success stories. Most of the original eateries near American Airlines Center have long since shuttered because either they were too expensive for the event crowds, or they just plain sucked. And in some cases, both. Enter Naga Thai Kitchen and bar, the newest concept from the minds behind two of our favorite NYC Thai spots, Sea Thai Bistro and Peep Thai Nouveau. Just a couple short blocks from the home to Britney Spears concerts, Smucker’s Stars on Ice and from what we’ve been told, basketball and hockey games, the prices are perfect for attracting a good crowd, but hopefully the chic design will be enough to scare off the Hooters riff-raff.

Cash Is So Twentieth Century: Bump iPhones to Exchange Money Instead

While PayPal has been less and less relevant, thanks to competitors like Google Checkout and Amazon, they may just stage a comeback with an idea that's cute and useful at the same time: a bump-triggered iPhone app.

Bump Technologies, the company that makes the Bump iPhone app, provided the underlying tech for PayPal's newly announced app. But instead of exchanging contact information, now you can exchange money. The app also includes a tax, tip, and check calculating feature, so you can figure out who owes what at a table, then simply bump phones to get all the money to one person, who can then pay a single bill for the entire table, saving the waitstaff at the restaurant the headache of running twelve different credit cards through.

The app could, at some point, also be used for very small businesses in place of expensive credit card readers--especially independent sellers like those at a farmers market, craft fair, or adorable lemonade stand. Of course, as not everyone has either an iPhone or a PayPal account, let alone both, this isn't going to replace credit cards, but could definitely be useful in certain circumstances. The app is available now, for free, in the App Store.

03.16.2010 - Tennis, Anyone?
We remember 8th grade tennis lessons like they happened yesterday. The long, summer afternoons drinking Rondo with our babysitter’s 19-year-old boyfriend as he tried his best to teach us the basic skills necessary to play the sport. But we were in 15, 30, 40 love with him and couldn’t hit a tennis ball to save our lives because we were too busy imagining what was beneath those tiny white tennis shorts of his.

Sappho Speaks: The Gift Of A Real Friend
There were days that strung into weeks, maybe years where I had convinced myself that all I needed wasme, myself, I. I would occasionally let people in only to be reminded that the gift of friendship always came with a steep price, especially for me as I opened the door so wide after going without the gentle breeze of human intimacies for so long that I was easy prey for my so-called friends. It may not happen after a month, or six, sometimes not even a year, but sooner or later the hammer dropped and something was stolen from me – both materialistically and emotionally and I would retreat back into myself, promising never to let anyone close again. What a fool’s oath! We do all need each other in the end but bonds of trust are living, breathing things.
