 Welcome back to my Real L Word Recap! In this episode we get to see Mikey tank her career. But that’s later, first we have some interviews to get through. This week’s question is about how you came out to your family. 13 year old Whitney was heading out of the door to head to National Coming Out Day, she yelled “Dad I’m gay” he yelled back “Okay” and that was that. When Nik told her mom, her mom said that she always thought Nik was in love with her college roommate, she was right. Mikey grew up in a religious household. Her grandmother wouldn’t say Lesbian for five years. Mikey felt a lot of catholic guilt. Tracy told her mom she was in love with a woman named Kelly and her mom’s face dropped and it hurt. Jill told her parents she was in love with a woman, they said they needed time to process. Rose’s family was mostly ok with it, grandma wouldn’t let her have girls in her room when she was a teenager, which was obviously the right move. It’s interesting that the two latina ‘characters’ on the show had two such different experiences with their families, proving that stereotypes are bad! Thank god you were here Ilene Chaiken, to help us understand diversity.
Rose is at bar having a bromance drinking session. Rose tells her bros about the strippers. Rose says not to twatter or bbm about the strippers because it’s imperative that Natalie does not find out. Ummm…does Rose not know that she’s being taped. Then she says, “If that makes or breaks us, it’s retarded.” Maybe that would be a stupid thing to break up over, but lying to her for months and then letting the truth come out on the show, that is totally worth breaking up over. Rose admits that she has a double standard and would never let Natalie motorboat two strippers at once. One of Rose’s friends calls her a “Puerto Rican Husband,” which is only funny if you are latina. The more we see Rose’s friends the more I think I know one or two of them. Rose’s double standard doesn’t really matter because Natalie probably doesn’t have urges to pay to have saggy boobs in her face.
Cut to Tracy’s house. Tracy’s sister middle sister Amy comes over with her boyfriend and baby of the family, Audrey is there as well. Amy isn’t that cool with the gay thing but little behatted Audrey loves the gays. They bring up the matriarch of the family and how she will react to Stamie and Amy freezes up. Amy is being bitchy and Stamie says she’s scared of her. Finally, Stamie has met someone scarier than her! Then Amy has a break down about ordering food and decides to leave, even though she never sees Tracy anymore. Tracy and Amy used to go out fishing for men together and since Tracy came out to her, their relationship has been weird. Sad.
Nikki and Jill are finally leaving the house. They got themselves a private dining room for dinner at Bastide. Soooo they aren’t saving money for the wedding? Anyway they are out to talk about the wedding. Jill makes Nik promise not to argue with her about it and they shake hands. So formal, this contract Jill wants to make with her beloved. They decide to each only have two people stand up for them and not have a ton of bridesmaids. Nik’s mom is going to walk her down the aisle because her father is neurotic and doesn’t like to leave the house. Nik is sad because her parents aren’t who she thought they were. Her parents got divorced in her 20s. Nik appeared on Oprah in 2006, on a show that talked about woman who discovered they were gay after they were married. Her father called her and said “Today I turned on Oprah and saw a beautiful woman and then she was gay and I thought what a waste of a woman.” Basically, her dad is mentally ill and a pretty big jerk. The women embrace other their private dining table.
Whitney is also out to dinner, with her pretty sister Alexis. Whitney starts talking to her sister about her girl drama. She says she is honest with everyone and she has warned them all if they have feelings for her, that’s all them. Whitney also tells Alexis that she called her father, who never calls her. She was mad at her dad for a long time because he cheated on her mom and was a huge player. She used to play soccer, she would look up at the bleachers and all the women would be all over her dad and not paying attention. She knows she’s like her dad and isn’t proud of it. Sad. Also, she has her sister’s name tattooed on her arm, which is kind of weird.
Mikey is on her way to NYC with one of the S girls, her intern/assistants. Mikey is showcasing her clients to important NYC Editors. Why wasn’t I invited, Mikey? Watevs, I’m sure I will make it out to the next one. The designers are setting up their clothes and the editors are due to arrive at 9.
Natalie and her sister Leslie are getting their nails done, to get Natalie ready for her new job working for Rose. Natalie says her mother birthed 5 children and 3 of them are gay, Leslie, herself and her brother Steven. Which is really interesting, both because I wasn’t sure if Nat considered herself gay or not and because Leslie is almost as cute Nat. The girls get their toes done and talk about the fight with Rose. Nat talks about her first day not working. Rose told her to iron and then gave her a credit card to go shopping. Leslie calls her a baby momma. Leslie knew Rose before Natalie did, Leslie is a DJ and has known Rose for awhile. The girls want to plan a dinner where Rose can meet their momma.
Back in NYC, Mikey is fucked. Like, she’s fucking fucked. The ‘amazing’ PR woman, Jackie Kennedy, that Mikey booked to get editors there has failed. The editors are not coming. The showroom is empty and the designers look like hungry lions pacing in their cages, ready to rip MIkey limb from limb. Okay, only one looks like that. Mikey makes everyone Mimosas to get them loose. Everyone is happy to get them except for the one that wants to strangle Mikey with her monogrammed blazer. Mikey is freaking out because she knows her clients are upset. Sooo she keeps drinking, as much as possible.
Tracy is on her bed calling scary sister Amy. Amy mentions that their mother has been asking about Stamie. Tracy thinks it’s a good step forward for her mom but she still wants her mom to come directly to her and ask.
Nik and Jill are going up the hill to Malibu to look at a wedding venue. The venue is a private house that the owner rents out for weddings and other events. The house is styled after an Italian villa and Nikki immediately falls in love. She wants the wedding there, Jill isn’t sure and thinks it’s too expensive. Oh tight fisted Jill, why don’t you just ask Showtime to pay for it? Maybe if you two had sex on camera like Whitney, they would get you the house for the wedding.
Cut back to Nikki and Jill and their wedding planner. Nik wants to get married at the house, doesn’t need to see any more venues. Jill wants to keep looking. Nik reveals she has anxiety and has combated it and become a strong woman. The house is really over budget for them, which Jill points out. I believe they said that the venue is 25,000 for the day. Nik says so they can cut back in other areas and serve pizza for dinner. Hell yeah Nik, pizza is awesome. They end up deciding to look at more venues.
Back to NYC. It’s 4, the showroom is still mostly empty. The editors that did show up are small potatoes and Mikey is hitting the sauce. Mikey is going to a tranny club and Showtime talks to the coolest queer ever. He is outside the club wearing a beret with Barbie legs glued onto it. He says that lesbians are his favorite, he wishes he was a lesbian because you have so much cunt but no cuntiness. Oh, my bereted friend, if only you could meet Whitney! She would break your lesbo-lovin heart. Mikey busts into the club like a woman bent on destroying herself and she does! She gets plastered and throws herself all over drag queens and shoves someone’s bald head into her breasts. Mikey and the S girl go back to their hotel room and Mikey says “Ohhh I’m so drunk I’m slurring” which maybe means she’s not as drunk as she’s pretending to be.
In LA, Tor Whitney and Alyssa are enjoying a quiet evening at home. Tor got a tiny puppy that she lets lick the back of her throat. EEEWWWW. Tor says she doesn’t want anything from Whitney, because she knows she’s being played. Whit feels bad that she’s hurting Tor’s feelings.
The next morning, the S girl is going to the showroom by herself. She says that Mikey will be heading over soon. Cut to Mikey, still in bed, still in her clothes from the day before. The S girl starts busting her ass to try to make things run smooth and she does so with the help of Jackie Kennedy.
Tracy is having lunch with Scary Amy. Amy tells her that mom would prefer it if Tracy was with a man, but isn’t ready to ask Tracy about it. Tracy says her patience is running thin and her sister tells her to get her ass back into the closet. Tracy is actually putting her foot down about something and showing emotion, at least in her confessional. She says she’s done with her mom tiptoeing around her life.
Nik happens to have a dear old friend who calls to ask if he could be the Rabbi at their wedding. The girls are happy that the wedding is coming tomorrow. Jill doesn’t want Nik to push her about having the wedding at the house. Nik tries begging and then bullying. They argue a little. Why do they already look like they are wearing wedding rings? Weren’t they wearing engagement rings before? Did they film this scene after they were married?
Mikey finally shows up to the press event, at 4 pm. Now all the designers want to kill her because they know she partied too hardy last night and “crawled back to her hotel room.” Buuurrrnnn. Mikey says she needs to jump through hoops and make things happen. Too late, sugar. Mikey goes up to one of the designers and tells him he missed a great night, he’s like “but I wasn’t invited asshole.”
Whitney takes Tor, Scarlett and Alyssa out to a club. Alyssa tells Whit that she might have hinted to Tor and Scarlett that they would be a good match. Next thing you know, Scarlett and Tor come back together from the bathroom. Whitney is a little upset about this. Personally, I think Scarlett and Tor would be adorable. They are both so cute and want to be in relationships.
Rose is back, I was hoping she would be gone for the whole episode. Natalie used to tell her mom that Rose was a boyfriend named Robert. Nat tells us that her mom is sick and is in and out of the hospital. They all meet for dinner with sister Leslie. Her mom is beautiful and a very tolerant, smart woman. She kind of knew Nat was gay and was glad when she revealed Robert was Rose. Leslie came out when she was 14 and her mom has defended and love her child ever since. Rose talks about her derelict mom. Rose opens up and gets along with the family. She fits right in and it’s a nice little dinner.
Whitney and her posse leave the club and go back to her apartment. She asks Scarlett if she is into Tor, Scarlett says no. Scarlett looks hot. Now, Whitney gets Tor alone and confirms that Tor isn’t into Scarlett. Tor says she’s getting a job and leaving. Some girl, who is watching the drama unfold, says this whole drama is wack! It’s really funny because the girl is really drunk. Whit says she is a friend of Scarlett’s but she can’t seem to remember Scarlett’s name. At 2:30 Whit is resting on a chair and Tor and Scarlett are looking at pictures online and it does look like Scarlett is a little into Tor. Then Tor goes and straddles Whitney and kisses her. Scarlett leaves. Whit tells Tor she doesn’t want to be in a relationship but that she has feelings for Tor and doesn’t want to mess things up for the future. Didn’t she want Sarah for the future? How many futures does this bitch think she has? Then her and Tor sleep in the same bed together and Whitney watches her sleep and strokes her hair. Weird.
Mikey is heading back to LA, career in shambles, hunted by angry fashion designers. She knows she fucked up. Her S girl knows Whitney fucked up. Mikey says she’s not an alcoholic and doesn’t have a drinking problem. Call me naïve, but when your drinking affects your work, isn’t that when it becomes a problem?
Next week: Whit hooks up with Tor then sleeps with Romi in front of her. Tracy wants her mom to meet Stamie. Rose wants to hang out with her ex Angel, that she had to get a restraining order from and Natalie cries.
This episode was a little boring and I didn’t find any of our headlining ladies particularly attractive. What did you all think?
