This Tuesday, Ken Keechl was elected Mayor of Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) for 2009-2010. Keechl was elected unanimously by the Board of County Commissioners to lead Broward’s 1.8 million residents, making him the first openly-gay Mayor in Fort Lauderdale.
Keechl sponsored Broward County's resolution seeking repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, sponsored an amendment to include transgender individuals in the Broward County Human Rights Act, and he has made domestic partnership benefits a key component for competitive procurement contracts.
"I appreciate the opportunity to serve all citizens of Broward County, and to lead our County through the challenges we face in the coming year," he said.
